How Often Should Your Dog Be Groomed?

Untitled-3 copyA Great Haircut is Not the Only Thing to Consider

There are many reasons your dog should be groomed on a regular basis. Ideally you should be getting your pet groomed every 4-6 weeks. No matter the breed or coat, there are many different factors that determine how often you should groom your pet. It does not solely depend on how long their coats are. Nails trimmed, ear hair, anal gland expression, teeth brushing and early detection of parasites & skin issues are the important reasons why it is important to get any breed of dog groomed regularly.

Eyes and Ears
Eyes and ears of a pet are just as important as the coat and skin. If your pet’s eyes are congested with overgrown hair or debris, it will cause them to tear up and create more debris. Even causing those ugly tear stains and can lead to painful ear infections. Also important is the removal of ear wax and yeast buildup in dogs that do not have hair in their ear canals.

Toenails
When a dog’s nails are too long it can cause their pads to shift over making it uncomfortable to stand. A dog’s skeletal structure may be compromised as well as the organs and nervous system. Their dewclaws may grow into the skin as well, causing pain and infection. Left too long, the quick (blood vein in the nail) will grow to a point that the nails cannot be clipped back far enough to be healthy for your pet.

Dental Care
Doggy Dental is extremely important as well maintaining your canine’s teeth and gums is crucial for their health. Groomers can offer teeth brushing which, if done on a regular basis, can make a big difference in keeping a pet’s breath smelling fresh and preventing tooth decay.

Parasite & Insect Control
Other issues to consider are insects, dirt and germs. Do you have a fear of finding a flea or tick on your pet? Even worse if your pup has an infestation. Having a family dog, that interacts with kids and company, is important that they are insect, parasite and germ-free. Taking your pets into your Groomer can ensure that they are flea and tick free and their overall health is in tip-top shape.

Skin issues
Early detection of very serious conditions can be life-saving under certain circumstances. Groomers that do hand blow-drying see every inch of the dog’s skin during the grooming process. Skin imperfections are key to what is going on with the dog internally. For example, early detection of Cancerous Sarcomas can be the difference between life and death in some cases. Allergies, rashes & skin mite detection are also easier to alleviate if caught early. Groomers have many products and applications that can help keep dogs skin healthy if done on a regular basis.

Our Shampoos

After being in the industry for over 30 years, having had several grooming businesses and hundreds of dog shows under our belts, we have carefully selected only the finest shampoos for our clients. In fact, we are convinced that the shampoo products we use are the best quality available. Plus, these shampoos are made right here in the United States.

Our shampoos contain natural, chemical-free ingredients with soothing aromatherepeutic fragrances. Often when we bath our clients’ dogs, depending on the breed, color and type of coat, we give them 2 baths, one for basic cleaning and the other for color enhancement. Texture of the coat also plays a part in our choosing the correct product.

It’s good to know that the shampoos we use are natural, because we like to give them a nice, warm soaking. These wonderful shampoos help to bring out the most vibrant color in the coat.

One of our stylists has very sensitive hands. It actually became a problem for her. Her hands would crack and burn due to excessive use of other so-called quality shampoos, day in and day out. After switching to these great shampoos, her irritations vanished. This certainly demonstrates that many dogs and cats have skin irritations due to shampoos that are being used out there.

Also, when it’s appropriate, we will use certain conditioners which are most suitable for any given pet.

We’re confident that the shampoos we use will make a big difference for your pet.

Foxtails and Dogs Don’t Mix

Donnie Dog Says…

“Foxtails and Dogs are not a good combination. As a matter of fact this is a recipe for disaster… especially for dogs with long-haired coats.

“Foxtails are a dried thistle from a grassy weed that when caught in a dog’s coat, it can bury itself deep inside. They can plant themselves into the dog’s skin and continue to grind in from there. We have seen instances where they needed to be surgically removed.

“Here in Southern California there are foxtails all over the place, and all around Riverside County. Many pets come to our shop for a haircut or routine grooming, and the owner never even knew there were foxtails in the coat until we were able to do some clipping.

“Other threats of foxtails is that they can get into the ears and eyes of your pet and they can cause serious damage. Foxtails can even travel into vital organs, like the heart, the brain and the lungs which can be fatal.  If you have to go to the vet for a foxtail abscess, it can be costly and miserable for your dog.

“So, take it from Donnie Dog… Keep foxtails under control on your property. When you are out walking your dog, keep him out of any areas where foxtails are present.

“Of course, regular routine grooming by a competent professional Groomer will help ensure there are no foxtails on your loving friend.
